Title

Resolution approving the City of Milwaukee Vision Zero Action Plan.

Analysis

This resolution approves the City of Milwaukee Vision Zero Action Plan, in alignment with the City’s commitment to becoming a Vision Zero community and with the goal of achieving zero traffic deaths by the end of 2037.

Body

Whereas, Common Council File Number 211255, adopted June 21, 2022, committed the City of Milwaukee to becoming a Vision Zero Community; and

Whereas, Vision Zero is “a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all”; and

Whereas, Vision Zero was first implemented in Sweden in the 1990’s, has been successful across Europe, and now has a network of over 50 cities in the United States; and

Whereas, The City has committed to the following Vision Zero principles:

1.                     Building and sustaining leadership, collaboration, and accountability - especially among a diverse group of stakeholders including community members, transportation professionals, policymakers, public health officials, and police.

2.                     Collecting, analyzing, and using data to understand trends and potential disproportionate impacts on traffic deaths on certain populations.

3.                     Prioritizing equity and community engagement.

4.                     Managing speed to safe levels

5.                     Setting a timeline to achieve zero traffic deaths and serious injuries, which brings urgency and accountability, and ensuring transparency on progress and challenges.
