Title

Substitute resolution urging the Milwaukee Fire Department to limit the number of brownouts to no more than 2 per day during 2010.

 

Analysis

As a result of funding reductions in 2010, the Fire Department has recently announced the implementation of a plan that includes 3 brownouts per day during the first 2 months of 2010. It was the Common Council’s understanding that the Fire Department would limit brownouts to no more than 2 per day during 2010. This resolution urges the City of Milwaukee’s Fire Department to limit the number of brownouts to no more than 2 per day during 2010.

 

Body

 

Whereas, The 2010 City Budget includes funding reductions in various  departments to address the fiscal challenges facing the City; and

 

Whereas, These funding reductions resulted in a reduction of services provided by the Milwaukee Fire Department, including the elimination of a shift of a ladder company or engine company, on a rotating basis, from fire houses that house more than one company, commonly referred to as brownouts; and

 

Whereas, The Fire Department has recently announced the implementation of a plan that includes 3 brownouts per day during the first 2 months of 2010; and  

 

Whereas, It was the Common Council’s understanding that the Fire Department would limit brownouts to no more than 2 per day during 2010; and

 

Whereas, The implementation of a plan that includes 3 brownouts per day increases the threats to the health and safety of Milwaukee’s citizens and Fire Department personnel, and is therefore not acceptable; now therefore, be it 

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council urges the City of Milwaukee’s Fire Department to limit the number of brownouts to no more than 2 per day during 2010.
