Title

Substitute resolution relating to the inclusion of Street Angels as a participating recipient of donations in future City Combined Giving campaigns.

Analysis

This resolution directs the proper City officials to take the actions necessary to ensure that Street Angels is included as a participating recipient of donations in the annual City of Milwaukee Combined Giving Campaign.

Body

Whereas, The City’s Combined Giving Campaign is an annual fund drive in which City employees pool their resources to improve the quality of life in the Milwaukee community by contributing to umbrella groups of local nonprofit agencies, individual agencies within those umbrella groups, various designated unaffiliated agencies or other qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that provide health or human services in Wisconsin; and

 

Whereas, Street Angels, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established in 2016 to assist neighbors without homes in the greater Milwaukee area; and

 

Whereas, The staff and volunteers of Street Angels travel throughout Milwaukee County three nights per week to conduct outreach to those in need; and

 

Whereas, The short-term goal of the program is to make sure people are warm and fed, and the long-term goal is to cultivate relationships, earn trust, and assist people in connecting to the resources that can help them get off the streets; and

 

Whereas, Street Angels staff and volunteers connect with an average of 120 individuals per outreach evening; and

 

Whereas, In 2021, the Street Angels team served more than 13,500 meals on the streets of Milwaukee and connected with 589 unique individuals who were experiencing homelessness; and

 

Whereas, Since July of 2018, Street Angels has been able to assist 378 individuals in connecting to permanent housing resources; and

 

Whereas, Street Angels is 100% community funded through private donors, philanthropic grants, community fundraising, and corporate sponsorships; and

 

Whereas, Including Street Angels as a participating recipient of the Combined Giving Campaign could be very beneficial to the organization and community members who are served by it; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the proper City officials are directed to take the actions necessary to ensure that Street Angels is included as a participating recipient of donations in future City of Milwaukee Combined Giving Campaigns.
