Title
Resolution directing the Department of Public Works to prepare a report on the feasibility of funding and implementing various improvements to a portion of N. Van Buren Street.
Analysis
This resolution directs the Department of Public Works and the Department of City Development to investigate the narrowing of N. Van Buren Street from E. Kilbourn Avenue to E. Brady Street to provide one travel lane and one parking lane in each direction. The departments will also determine if protected bicycle lanes, left turn lanes, widened sidewalks and appropriate street scaping can be financed with a new Tax Incremental District involving the development under construction at 1237 N. Van Buren Street. The departments shall report back to the Common Council by January 31, 2022.

Whereas, Reckless driving in the city has created significant risks to the health and safety of the community; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee recognizes a need for taking a proactive and prevention-oriented approach to decrease the number of reckless driving incidents; and

Whereas, The Common Council adopted Resolution File Number 181420 on January 14, 2019, creating a City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force, which issued its final report and recommendations in June, 2020; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee’s Complete Streets Policy, adopted by Common Council File 180922 on October 16, 2018, supports facilities that maximize safety and comfort for all users, of all ages and abilities, whether walking, using mobility aids, bicycling, riding public transportation, or driving motor vehicles; and

Whereas, The City Plan Commission has endorsed New Land Enterprises LLP’s plan to develop a 9-story, 251-unit apartment building on the 1.3-acre parcel at 1237 N. Van Buren Street; and
