Title
Substitute resolution relating to the 30th Street railroad right-of-way.
Analysis
This resolution directs the Departments of City Development and Public Works to work with the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee to initiate discussions with WATCO, the transportation service company which owns the 30th Street railroad right-of-way, to explore the possibility of acquiring the 30th Street railroad corridor for redevelopment by the City as a dedicated bike and pedestrian trail, and a commuter/light rail system, while continuing railroad freight operations.

The resolution also directs these departments to report the progress of the discussions to the Common Council by February 1, 2022.
Body
Whereas, The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee is working with local, state and federal partners on a plan to redevelop the 30th Street Industrial Corridor; and

Whereas, Redevelopment plans include a 6.7 mile dedicated bike and pedestrian trail connecting North Side neighborhoods to the Hank Aaron Trail; and

Whereas, Redevelopment plans may include a commuter/light rail system; and

Whereas, WATCO owns the railroad right-of-way in which the proposed trail would be located; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Departments of City Development and Public Works are directed to work with Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee to initiate discussions with WATCO, the transportation service company which owns the 30th Street railroad right-of-way, to explore the possible acquisition of the 30th Street railroad corridor by the City; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the purpose of this acquisition is to develop a dedicated bike and pedestrian trail, and a commuter/light rail system, while continuing railroad freight operations; and, be it
