Title
Resolution proclaiming the second Monday in October of each year as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the City of Milwaukee.

Analysis
This resolution proclaims the second Monday in October of each year as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the City of Milwaukee.

Body
Whereas, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations-sponsored International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas; and

Whereas, Several communities throughout the United States have recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day, including the City of Madison in 2005 and again in 2016, and Milwaukee County and Dane County in 2017; and

Whereas, Native Americans have existed in Wisconsin for more than 10,000 years and continue to play an important role in Wisconsin’s communities, culture, and economy; and

Whereas, Wisconsin is home to 11 Indigenous tribes and 86,000 Native Americans, and each tribe positively contributes to local and state economies, including the Chippewa, Menominee, and Potawatomi in Milwaukee; and

Whereas, Genocide, colonization, and years of discrimination and disparities have made life much more difficult for many Native Americans; and

Whereas, It is of critical importance to acknowledge the historical and cultural legacy of Indigenous peoples in Milwaukee and in Wisconsin, as well as the repression and injustice they have experienced since European contact; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee further wishes to affirm the vibrancy of the Native American community in Milwaukee and celebrates their contributions to our civic life; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the second Monday in October of each year shall be proclaimed as Indigenous People’s Day in the City of Milwaukee.
