Title
Substitute resolution establishing a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the establishment of a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea, in accordance with the agreement attached to this file. This sister city relationship shall expire after 5 years unless extended for another 5 years by Common Council resolution.
Body
Whereas, The Common Council created the Sister Cities Committee to assist in the establishment and maintenance of sister city relationships pursuant to Sister Cities International guidelines; and
Whereas, The Sister Cities Committee reviews requests for new relationships and investigates and makes recommendations to the Common Council concerning the establishment of new relationships and the maintenance or termination of existing friendly exchange relationships and sister city relationships; and
Whereas, The Sister Cities Committee has reviewed the application of Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea, and recommends that a sister city relationship be established pursuant to ch. 335 of the Code; and
Whereas, Daegu Metropolitan City has a population of 2.49 million and is the 3rd largest metropolitan area in South Korea with respect to both population and commerce; and
Whereas, Daegu Metropolitan City is home to several large, prestigious South Korean universities, including Kyungpook National University, and many smaller, specialized public and private colleges and universities; and
Whereas, Daegu Metropolitan City is a riverfront city working to establish itself as a ‘Water City’ and to establish global networks among water industry experts, and has hosted South Korea’s Water Expo, a large water-related forum and professional conference; and
Whereas, A sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea, will benefit both parties in water industry related technologies, trade, policies, trends and environmental changes, and will facilitate collaboration in water education, water technology and business as well as best practices related to municipal water treatment and supply; and
Whereas, The sister city relationship will receive local support through The Water Council; and
Whereas, The sister city relationship will also receive support in Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea, through the Daegu Metropolitan Government/International Affairs & Trade Division and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk International Exchange Association; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the establishment of a sister city relationship between the City of Milwaukee and Daegu Metropolitan City, South Korea, is authorized; and, be it
Further Resolved, That this sister city relationship shall expire after 5 years unless extended for another 5 years by Common Council resolution.
