This resolution assigns the honorary street name "Michelle Witmer" to North Richards Street from East Capitol Drive north to the terminus of North Richards Street in the 6th Aldermanic District.
Body
Whereas, Specialist Michelle Witmer was a member of the 32rd Military Police Company of the Wisconsin Army National Guard based at the Richards Street Armory at 4108 N. Richards Street; and
Whereas, Specialist Michelle Witmer was deployed with her unit to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was killed in Baghdad defending her unit's position during an enemy attack on April 9, 2004; and
Whereas, Specialist Michelle Witmer was the first female Wisconsin National Guard solider to be killed in combat; and
Whereas, Specialist Michelle Witmer was an exemplary Wisconsin National Guard solider whose courage and professionalism will inspire future generations of Wisconsin National Guard soldiers; and
Whereas, The honorary naming of North Richards Street north of East Capital Drive to the terminus of North Richards Street will honor Specialist Michelle Witmer's selfless service and heroic death, and serve as a perpetual reminder for the men and women serving in the Wisconsin National Guard, especially those stationed at the Richards Street Armory, and for all Americans, of the ultimate sacrifice America's citizen soldier may be called upon to make in defense of freedom; and
Whereas, Section 113-3 of the Code of Ordinances provides a procedure for assigning honorary street names, and s. 113-3-6 specifies criteria for the using the names of individuals when assigning honorary street names; and
Whereas, The Common Council finds the honorary naming of North Richards Street north of East Capitol Drive to the terminus of North Richards Street as "Michelle Witmer" meets the code criteria; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the honorary name of "Michelle Witmer" shall be assigned to North Richards Street north of East Capitol Drive to the terminus of North Richards Street; and, be it
Further Resolved, That signage for this honorary street naming comply with design specifications set by the Department of Public Works; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the petitioner has requested suitable honorary street-naming signage be fabricated and installed by the Department of Public Works at a cost to be paid in full by the petitioner; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works shall fabricate and install signage for this honorary street naming within 90 days of adoption of this resolution in compliance with s. 113-3; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the petitioner shall notify the Department of Public Works whenever signage for this honorary street naming needs to be replaced and the petitioner shall fully reimburse the City for any replacement.
