Title
Substitute resolution relative to acceptance and funding of a Helen Bader Foundation Grant for Global Youth Service Day 2014.
Analysis
This substitute resolution authorizes the Department of City Development to accept and fund a grant for Global Youth Service Day 2014 from the Helen Bader Foundation in the amount of $5,000 with a City Share of $0 and a Grantor Share of $5,000. The purpose of this grant is to support the activities of Global Youth Service Day 2014, including planning, coordination, promotion and financial underwriting of citywide service projects as part of Global Youth Service Day on April 11-13, 2014.
Body
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee (“City”) appears to be eligible for grant funds from the Helen Bader Foundation to plan, coordinate, promote and conduct citywide Global Youth Service Day (“GYSD”) 2014 activities; and

Whereas, The Department of City Development (“DCD”) has served as Milwaukee’s GYSD Lead Agency since 2011, with grant funds from Youth Service America, Inc., to plan, coordinate, promote and conduct citywide GYSD activities; and

Whereas, Milwaukee’s 2013 GYSD attracted more than 1,600 young people who participated in 26 service projects that generated more than 6,200 hours of community service to improve Milwaukee’s schools, neighborhoods and communities; and

Whereas, Community service and service-learning are effective strategies to engage students in their education and better prepare them for high school graduation, career planning and post-secondary educational success, while providing needed services to other Milwaukee residents; and

Whereas, The Helen Bader Foundation has recognized the value and success of GYSD by providing a grant of $5,000 to support Milwaukee’s GYSD 2014 program; and
