Title

Substitute resolution designating the Milwaukee Institute as a high-capacity computing resource advisor to the City and as a technical advisor to the City for economic development.

Analysis

This resolution designates the nonprofit Milwaukee Institute as the official high-capacity computing resource advisor to the City.  The Milwaukee Institute shall also act in an advisory role on technology-related economic development matters.

Body

Whereas, The nonprofit Milwaukee Institute was founded December of 2007, with initial funding provided by Milwaukee technology companies to encourage the formation of a research and technology development community in the region; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Institute seeks to create a world-class regional computing “grid” comprised of high-performance computer, communications, and data management resources, a suite of shared scientific and engineering applications, including interactive web-based collaboration services, all supported by technical personnel with infrastructure- and domain-specific hardware and software expertise; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Institute promotes and supports the creation, use, development and retention of technical computing resources in Milwaukee by developing programs and approaches that stimulate innovation and entrepreneurial activity; and

Whereas, The policy initiatives of the Milwaukee Institute foster the development of strategies and long-range plans for creation of a collaborative computational infrastructure in the region and encourage improvements in that infrastructure in support of regional high technology research programs; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Institute is an independent research, education and public policy organization whose goal is to provide world-class computing, communications, and collaboration facilities in support of economic development through scientific engineering and technology leadership in the Great Lakes region, particularly southeastern Wisconsin; and

Whereas, It is advantageous to the Mayor, the Common Council and the public to promote and support the creation, development and retention of affordable, collaborative high-capacity computing resources, infrastructure and use in southeastern Wisconsin; and

Whereas, It is beneficial for southeastern Wisconsin to have an organization to assist with the promotion and support of high-capacity computing and its value as a tool for economic development; and

Whereas, The Milwaukee Institute’s promotion and support of high-capacity computing lessens the burden on City government, as the City would have to perform these functions in the absence of the Milwaukee Institute; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Institute is designated as the official high-capacity computing resource advisor to the City; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Milwaukee Institute shall act in an advisory role to the City on technology-related economic development matters.
