8/3/20200 HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

Minutes note: Mr. Tim Askin said the proposal is to paint a mural on the south wall of the Railway Exchange at 229 E. Wisconsin Ave. The whole wall will be painted (3300-4300 square feet) and the review does not speak to the content of the mural, per the advice of the City Attorney. The south wall, which is the back wall, was replaced by the current owner as the wall was failing. Mr. Askin read the ordinance guidelines and the East Side Commercial district guidelines. Patti Keating Kahn - building owner - the south wall is not original and has been replaced twice. HPC does not control paint colors, and this is private property, not public and the objections are to content, not to methods. Public comment: Dr. Camara - opposed Jeremy Ebersole - Milwaukee Preservation Alliance - wants guidelines in place Katie Avila Loughmiller - A mural of this size would affect the entire district and it's currently not on panels, would it need to be re-submitted? Ian Russell - The building is historic in the way it sits now Zachary Lifton - this is a significant alteration that affects the district as a whole, rather than just one specific building.
