Bohl, Thank you for meeting with me, Dr. Dan Folkman, and Dr. Christine Merritt, from 350.org Milwaukee on Friday. We are encouraged by your interest and and your grasp of the need for solar power and possible ways to integrate it into the Bucks complex. We seek an increased commitment – a major commitment – from the Bucks to minimize the carbon footprint of the arena complex and make Milwaukee a clear, iconic leader in the use of solar energy. It is just one of many issues you’ll deal with Tuesday, but it is unique and urgent among them. If you allow us to speak at Zoning, we’ll be comprehensive but concise. Dan Folkman and I can address the possibilities – ways solar collection can be integrated into different parts of the complex and benefits that would accrue from it. Erick Shambarger of ECO, who met with our group in Ald. Kovac’s office, can testify, particularly about financial incentives for solar projects. Other Milwaukeeans may wish to speak, such as Dr. George Stone, who has run the annual Sustainability Conference in Milwaukee. Perhaps you can be alert for one or two who could enhance our arguments. Again, after we testify, we think an effective strategy at Zoning would include two things: 1. A committee member asks the Bucks and design team representatives what it would take for them to move in our direction. 2. The chair holds off on one, two, or all three final votes until the Bucks and their design team join an ad hoc committee to meet at least once with Mr. Shambarger, a Zoning Committee member, perhaps another City administrator, and a community solar advocate and report (in writing?) to you on the group’s considerations and conclusions. Sincerely, Larry Hoffman Sustainability Committee, 350.org Milwaukee
