Resolution authorizing the application of a 2009 Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency and Response Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Milwaukee Fire Department to apply for a Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency and Response (SAFER) Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the amount of $1,985,679.90. This grant provides funding for wages and fringe benefits for 15 Firefighter positions for 2 years.
Body

Whereas, The Milwaukee Fire Department is experiencing a high level of vacancies due to retirements and promotions; and

 

Whereas, The planned recruit classes for 2010 are not likely to off-set the high number of vacancies; and

 

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee appears to be eligible for grant funds from the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency for assisting local fire departments with staffing and deployment; and

Whereas, The operation of this 2-year grant project would provide $1,985,679.90 to provide wage and fringe benefit funding for 15 Firefighters in 2010 through 2012; and

 

Whereas, The grant requires no local matching funds; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Fire Department is authorized to apply for a grant entitled Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency and Response Grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency.
