Title
Substitute Resolution authorizing the City Engineer to apply for four (4) Safe Routes to School Program grants.
Analysis
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is soliciting applications for funds under the Safe Routes to School Program. The program is intended to get more children in kindergarten through 8th grades walking or biking to school rather than riding in busses or cars. Successful grant applications will be funded 100 percent by the grant program. The Department of Public Works intends to submit four (4) applications.

Whereas, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is soliciting applications for funds under the Safe Routes to School Program; and

Whereas, The program is intended to encourage children in kindergarten through 8th grades to walk or bike to school; and

Whereas, The Department of Public Works (DPW) has identified four (4) locations for infrastructure related projects; and

Whereas, DPW intends to submit applications for the following projects:

1. Garden Homes School
New traffic signal

2. James Fenimore Cooper Elementary School
Traffic Calming

3. Sherman School
Student drop-off plan and school zone signage improvements.

4. Citywide
Install countdown times at 29 signalized intersections where crossing guards are stationed.

; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City Engineer is authorized to submit applications for the Safe Routes to School Program at the following locations:

1. Garden Homes School, estimated cost $90,000
2. James Fenimore Cooper Elementary School, estimated cost $82,000
3. Sherman School, estimated costs $47,000
4. Citywide countdown timers, estimated cost $364,800

Total Estimated Cost $583,800 (100 percent Federal Funds)

Further Resolved, That any successful grant projects will be brought to the Common Council for approval to enter into Project A...
