Analysis
This resolution appropriates up to $120,000 from the Common Council Contingent Fund for the purpose of extending the street maintenance season.

Body
Whereas, The City endured the second snowiest winter in the City’s history, with snowfall totals for the 2007-08 winter season totaling 96.9 inches, compared to the average winter snowfall total of 49 inches; and

Whereas, A combination of the heavy snowfall totals, freeze -thaw moisture cycles, water seeping under street surfaces and a great number of salting and plowing operations caused excessive damage to the City’s streets, creating potholes that are potentially dangerous to motorists and pedestrians; and

Whereas, The appropriated funding for street maintenance and repairs will not be sufficient to address the additional damage occurring as a result of the extremely harsh winter; and

Whereas, It is in the best interest of the City and its residents to provide additional funding for street maintenance and repairs, to combat the wear and damage caused by the extreme winter weather; and

Whereas, An additional allocation of $120,000 will provide construction supplies and extend the streets maintenance season, for ten pothole crews, by four weeks; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that up to $120,000 be appropriated from the Common Council Contingent Fund (#0001-9990-C001-006300), (2008), to the DPW - Infrastructure Services Division, with up to $90,000 for salaries (#0001-5235-R999-006000) (2008) and up to $30,000 for construction supplies (#0001-5235-R999-63000) (2008).
