Resolution relating to application, acceptance and funding of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grant (Department of Public Works) “Assessing Milwaukee’s Urban Forest for Habitat Restoration.”
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works - Operations Division-Forestry Section to apply for, accept and fund a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grant “Assessing Milwaukee’s Urban Forest for Habitat Restoration.” The purpose of this grant is to demonstrate the importance of Milwaukee’s urban forest by planting trees to increase tree canopy and deliver Great Lakes protection. The total project cost is $100,000, of which 100% will be provided by the grantor with no cost-share from the City required. The program will include the following components:
1. Use a plantable space analysis to direct tree-planting efforts on public and private property to maximize restoration of Milwaukee’s urban forest.
a. Plant up to 2,000 small diameter trees.
b. Demonstrate tree planting with community volunteers.
2. Maintain ecological services provided by Milwaukee’s tree canopy to protect the health and function of Lake Michigan and area rivers.
3. Improve public understanding of the link between tree canopy and water quality.

Whereas, Under the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Number 10.675, the City of Milwaukee appears to be eligible for a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service; and
